Atletico Madrid great Luis Aragones could lose two of his most impressive records in the same season this year. After Antoine Griezmann usurped him as Atletico’s top scorer in their history, Jude Bellingham is coming for a unique feat in Spanish football history.

Aragones is the only midfielder in history to have won the Pichichi award for the top scorer in Spain’s top division. He managed to do so 54 years ago, scoring 15 times in the 1969-70 campaign. In a 30-game season, Aragones finished level at the top of the charts with teammate Jose Eulogio Garate, as recounted by Relevo.

Bellingham’s goal against Alaves moved him onto 19 league goals for the season, just one behind Girona’s Artem Dovbyk on 20. With two games remaining, Bellingham would be just the second central midfielder in history to win the award, albeit he has played in a number of positions this year.

Carlo Ancelotti has said that he will rotate his squad in the final weeks of the season, and that Bellingham’s Pichichi pursuit was not something they were thinking about. No doubt Bellingham will be desperate to be on the pitch against Villarreal and Real Betis. Girona face Valencia and Granada, while Alexander Sorloth of Villarreal is also on 19, and finishes against Osasuna. Robert Lewandowski has an outside chance with 17 goals and three games remaining against Almeria, Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano.
