Phillies Have Exciting Young Pitcher to Dangle at Trade Deadline

Despite classifying themselves as buyers ahead of the trade deadline, the Philadelphia Phillies have yet to make a move. Entering their series with the Miami Marlins on Monday, they are currently on the outside of the playoffs looking in after dropping two games to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It would be surprising if they did nothing with how many players in the outfield they've been linked to acquiring. A name in the organization that could be moved to get these upgrades is Griff McGarry.

According to MLB.com, McGarry is the Phillies' top trade chip ahead of the deadline.

"Philadelphia’s No. 4 prospect, the 24-year-old McGarry has performed well at Double-A this season, posting a 3.02 ERA in 12 starts while holding hitters to a .169 average. He has struck out 243 batters in 163 1/3 career innings in the Minors, though he’s also walked 98 – one more than the number of hits he’s allowed. Some believe he will ultimately find success as a big league closer, but with a big fastball and three other solid pitches, there’s plenty to like about McGarry," writes Mark Feinsand.

Under club control through 2029, he would be attractive for the teams eyeing a rebuild as they sell off their pieces this year.

MLB.com also projects that McGarry could make his major league debut at some point during the 2023 season.

Whether or not their top trade piece could land them the outfielder that will help them for the rest of the year is to be seen. However, the young right hander is a name to keep an eye on when it comes to trades before the deadline.
